Questions and answers

Where does my donation go?

Straight to the sponsoring charity, on its own donation page. The charity controls the funds and pays the researchers. Own Your Results never receives your donation.

Is my donation tax-deductible? Can I add Gift Aid?

In the US, donations to a 501(c)(3) sponsor may be tax-deductible as allowed by law, and the charity sends your receipt. In the UK, if you're a UK taxpayer, the charity may be able to claim Gift Aid on your donation. Each campaign shows which applies.

Do I get money back if the research works?

Donors receive updates and results. Donors do not receive any financial return.

Who can propose a project?

Anyone signed in: a patient or caregiver with a question, or a researcher with a project. A charity or our team can also post one for a researcher, who then confirms by email.

What if I don't know which charity to ask?

Choose "Help me find a sponsor" and our team will look for a suitable one.

How do you check the researchers are real?

Anyone named gets an email at their institution address and must confirm they are involved. Until they do, or the sponsor verifies them, their name does not appear publicly.

What is a conflict of interest?

When someone involved could gain money, or a family member could, from the project or a company connected to it. Every proposal asks about this, and the sponsor reviews anything flagged.

How big can a research ask be?

Most research asks are $100 to $10,000 (or about £80 to £8,000). Bigger asks are often declined, so we suggest splitting them into milestones.

Who owns Own Your Results?

Amanda Moore and Ricki Dhal. No charity owns it, including the sponsors on the site.

Is there an app?

You can add this site to your home screen today. A phone app is on the way. To give, the app opens the charity's donation page.
